Let old broken parts be forgot...

Ok, so I guess I lied when I said that brakes were next. My brother felt that instead of moving on to the next thing, it was better to get the interior put back together first. And he’s right.

Why did we take the seats and console out? Oh, that’s right- the ignition switch assembly. The one I temporarily replaced with this nifty hotwire box.

As you may recall, back at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , as we were looking the car over before my brother decided to buy it, one of the starting attempts suddenly resulted in something breaking loose inside the gear lever housing, where the ignition lock barrel and ignition switch reside. A common occurrence among Saabs, we would later find out.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

A small set of gears in the gear lever housing connect the lock barrel to the ignition switch, and operate the infamous reverse lockout mechanism. In this case, the gear below the lock barrel had two small tabs that had sheared off:

Without those tabs, the lock barrel flopped back and forth betweek key positions, without turning any of the little gears below.

So once the old gears were removed from the housing, the housing was cleaned and some fresh grease applied. The new gears also received a generous amount of lube, and went into the housing, along with the lock barrel and ignition switch.

With any luck, this’ll be the last time we see the hotwire box installed in this car.

And so, we began to reassemble the interior. That is, until we noticed that the gearshift lever would shift into all gear positions ...except 5th.
